TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN

There was once a washer man who had a donkey and a dog. One night when the whole world was sleeping, a thief broke into the house, the washer man was fast asleep too but the donkey and the dog were awake. The dog decided not to bark since the master did not take good care of him and wanted to teach him a lesson.

The donkey got worried and said to the dog that if he doesn't bark, the donkey will have to do something himself. The dog did not change his mind and the donkey started braying loudly.

Hearing the donkey bray, the thief ran away, the master woke up and started beating the donkey for braying in the middle of the night for no reason.

Moral of the story "One must not engage in duties other than his own"

Now take a new look at the same story...

The washer man was a well educated man from LUMS institute. He had the fundas of looking at the bigger picture and thinking out of the box. He was convinced that there must be some reason for the donkey to bray in the night. He walked outside a little and did some fact finding, applied a bottom up approach, figured out from the ground realities that there was a thief who broke in and the donkey only wanted to alert him about it. Looking at the donkey's extra initiative and going beyond the call of the duty, he rewarded him with lot of hay and other perks and became his favorite pet.

The dog's life didn't change much, except that now the donkey was more motivated in doing the dog's duties as well. In the annual appraisal the dog managed "ME" (Met Expectations) .
Soon the dog realized that the donkey is taking care of his duties and he can enjoy his life sleeping and lazing around.

The donkey was rated as "star performer". The donkey had to live up to his already high performance standards.

Soon he was over burdened with work and always under pressure and now is looking for a NEW JOB...

Moral of the story… ehmmm, please see above.

Disclaimer: All characters in the story are not at all imaginary.
Any resemblance to person living or dying of work is purely "intentional"

Top 10 Best iPhone Apps for Sports Fans + iTunes Links

As football season kicks off and baseball season wraps up, now's a good time to check out some of the great new sports apps for the iPhone and other mobile devices.

1. ESPN Scorecenter:

ESPN's free ScoreCenter app is free, accessible, and popular: Some 2.7 million people have downloaded it since it launched in June.

It lets you follow whichever sports you'd like, and puts your favorite teams on top. But serious fans might want something more sophisticated. (iTunes Link)

2. Sportacular Free and Pro:

More sophisticated than ESPN's Scorecenter app, Sportacular includes more options and information, including customized, real-time "push" notifications.

The company behind Sportacular, Citzen Sports, is co-founded by Jeff Ma, one of the members of the famous MIT Blackjack team. (iTunes links: Free - Pro ($1.99))

3. Yahoo! Fantasy Football:

Monitor and control your Yahoo! Fantasy Football team from the iPhone or iPod touch.

ESPN also offers an app for its Fantasy Football league. (iTunes Link)

4. Madden 2010:

The best football game for the iPhone, Madden 2010 offers a miniaturized version of the game you've known on game consoles for years.

We've already wasted hours of time playing this game, and especially like how it takes advantage of the iPhone's touch screen. Our only complaint: It's too easy. (iTunes Link ($9.99))

5. DirecTV SuperFan:

DirecTV offers live football video for the iPhone via this new app. Note: The app is free, but the service is very expensive: You must be a DirecTV subscriber, pay $300 for NFL Sunday Ticket, and another $100 for the SuperFan service. But if you're doing that already, the iPhone app is a no-brainer add-on.

This app is also available for the Palm Pre and select BlackBerry and Windows Mobile devices. (iTunes Link)

6. CBS Sports: College:

CBS is streaming some live college games -- one football and basketball game per week -- to the iPhone via its new CBS Sports: College app.

Video streams over 3G and wi-fi. (iTunes Link)

7. MLB At Bat:

The best live sports app of them all is still Major League Baseball's At Bat for the iPhone, which keeps getting better as the baseball playoffs approach.

This year, the league added live game radio and video feeds to the app, and recently allowed users to purchase live streams for individual games for $0.99 each. The league also offers a BlackBerry app. (iTunes Links: Full, $9.99 - Lite, Free)

8. ESPN Radio:

ESPN's new radio app offers live streams from more than 15 ESPN Radio stations across the country, including live college football broadcasts. (iTunes Link ($2.99))

9. ESPN Zoom Deluxe:

The same "photo hunt" game you're used to playing at a sports bar, but on your iPhone. From ESPN and EpicTilt. (iTunes Link ($2.99))

10. NFL App for Sprint:

Sprint customers -- no iPhone, but Palm Pre and BlackBerry -- can access an exclusive Sprint NFL app, which includes live video streaming of the NFL Network, plus live radio streams of NFL games.

Sprint tells us that more than 1.5 million subscribers have downloaded it.(Sprint Link)

Opera Mini 5 beta version available now

Opera Mini Version 5 Beta adds a few key features, including "speed dial" for calling up your favorite bookmarks quickly, improved touchscreen support, an integrated password manager, and most importantly, tabbed browsing.

The great thing about Opera Mini is that it works with a ridiculous number of handsets -- that's probably Opera proudly proclaims it's "the world's most popular Web browser for mobile phones" -- and a major new release has just hit the streets in beta form.

You've gotta be careful with this sort of stuff while it's in beta, of course, but hey -- it's a browser -- what can go wrong? Grab it now (including a customized BlackBerry build) from Opera's site.

Google now helps Government Agencies

Google now decided to launch a program which helps government agencies; Google's official site http://www.google.com/publicsector/ said that Most people reach government and other public sector websites by using Google and other search engines. This site is a guide to the tools and best practices that can help you reach, communicate and engage with your community. Most of these tools are free, so they can also help you do more with less.

According to Google's Official Blog:
  • Make your website, and the information it offers, easier to find. For example, in less than 50 technical staff hours, Arizona's Government Information Technology Agency made hundreds of thousands of public records and other webpages "crawlable" to search engines and visible in Google search results.
  • Visualize your information and tell your story in Google Earth & Maps to the hundreds of millions of people who use them. The State Department runs an interactive Google Map of Secretary Clinton's travels, which shows where she has been and includes photos and videos.
  • Use the power of online video to engage millions of potential viewers and give constituents a voice. In the U.S. alone, the Senate, House of Representatives, White House, and federal government, among others, all have YouTube channels.

gwabbit for BlackBerry makes email contact capture fast, easy, and fun!

gwabbit automatically scans incoming BlackBerry® emails, finds contacts, and instantly transforms them into contact records within your BlackBerry® address book! Try gwabbit for BlackBerry® free for 14 days and up to 20 contacts. Only $9.99/year.

The gwabbit for BlackBerry service is a combination of a device-client, and a back-end server. The client monitors opened emails, and checks whether they seem to include the signature of the sender.

If so, the client sends the information to the server for processing, and the server returns the results to the client. If a signature is indeed found, the client then prompts the user that contact information was found, and asks if the user wants to save it. It also searches the local address book to see if an address entry exists for that sender, and if so, asks the user whether he wants the information merged into the existing contact, or he prefers a new contact be created. If the information found does not add anything to the existing information, no prompt will appear. This architecture takes the load of the processing off the device, and enables gwabbit to constantly improve the recognition, without frequent client upgrades.

It does, however, involve a processing server, and information is submitted to that server. It is important to note that the server is used only to optimize the performance of gwabbit on the BlackBerry device. We do not capture or store contact information processed by the server. It is also useful to note that the user can change the settings of gwabbit so that only emails manually sent by him to gwabbit will be processed (manual mode, rather than automatic). gwabbit's privacy policy can be viewed here http://www.gwabbit.com/privacy.php.

BlackBerry Desktop Manager for Mac (Beta)

Calling all Mac + BlackBerry users... BlackBerry Desktop Manager for Mac, in all it's final beta status. Beta shmeta, who cares right!? Blackberry is ready to release the official RIM sanctioned desktop Blackberry Sync for Mac, so if it hits the interwebs a little early, all the better for aching Mac/Blackberry users.

This is version 1.0.0 beta software, which means there may be some glitches still, but if you're a Mac owner and have been waiting years for this then you may just want to throw caution out the door and give it a go (do so at your own risk of course!).

I installed it on my Mac all good. If you're not familiar with BBDM for Mac, you can visit blackberry.com/mac for more details and you can click the link below to download the unofficial release.

You can download it from here (thanks to CrackBerry):

Alternatively, you can choose to display related posts below each blog post. To implement that following these 3 simple steps.

1. Open your blog template the find the following line in the template.

<div class='post-footer-line post-footer-line-3'/>
...
</div>

2. Just below this code add a line of code like this.

<div class='post-footer-line post-footer-line-3'/>
...
</div>
<div id='related_posts'/>

3. Go to end of the template and find </body> tag. Just above this tag add the following two lines of code.

<script src='http://www.google.com/jsapi'/>
<script src='http://brps.appspot.com/brps.js' type='text/javascript'/>
</body>
______________________________________________________
Now save the template and view your blog. This script will show a maximum of 10 related posts. The execution time is very less because the data is cached by the script on the server.

Without wasting any time, let’s start it off! Here are 10 really cool free Blackberry applications.

1. Pandora Mobile

Pandora, reviewed in the past by MakeUseOf, has a great free Blackberry application which allows you to do almost everything you can do on the desktop version except right on your phone. You can create new stations, listen to already created ones, rate songs and more. Download it from your Blackberry’s browser here: http://www.pandora.com.

2. Neosistec CarFinder

Can’t remember where you parked your car in that large parking lot? When you leave your car, open CarFinder’s simple menu and mark your location through your Blackberry’s GPS. You can also send your marked location to a friend. Download it from your Blackberry’s browser here: http://www.neosistec.com/carfinder.

3. Qik Mobile

As I’ve reviewed before on MakeUseOf, Qik, which allows you to stream live video from your phone to the internet for free, has a great mobile application for Blackberry. With it, you can stream video online from your device for anyone to see, or limit access with a password. But as the service implies, your Blackberry must be a model with a camera for Qik to work. You can download Qik by going to their website on your Blackberry’s browser here: http://qik.com/m/dl/brands.

4. Google Maps

Just like the popular online maps site, Google Maps offers a great Blackberry application which allows for most of the same features on their site, except again, its running on your phone. You can get directions, get maps in satellite view and watch traffic and see your location (which can work even if your Blackberry doesn’t have GPS, but works better if it does). View a real-time online demo of Google Maps Mobile here or download it from your Blackberry’s browser here: http://m.google.com/maps.

If you like instant messaging, you’ll love Palringo. It is a mobile instant messaging client which supports AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo, Google Talk and more, all in one piece of software. Through way of different “channels”, Boopsie lets you intelligently search for content or articles on sites like IMDB, Wikipedia, Amazon and more.
