SurfKitchen Nominated as Finalist in 2009 Meffy Awards

SurfKitchen today announced that the Mobile Entertainment Forum has selected its latest deployment with Orange as a finalist in the “Search & Discovery” category for the 2009 Meffy Awards. The deployment, an upgrade to Orange Downloads, a branded, on-device storefront developed by SurfKitchen, included the introduction of a new mobile applications category that more than tripled sales of featured mobile applications within the first month of launch.

Now in their sixth year, the Meffys are recognized as the official benchmark for measuring success and rewarding innovation in the mobile entertainment industry. Entries for the “Search & Discovery” category were judged on their ability to make mobile content easy to find, purchase and popularize. The upgraded Orange Downloads was selected as one of five finalists with the judges recognizing how its exceptional user experience makes it easier and faster for subscribers to discover, select and use popular mobile Internet applications and information services within a single, intuitive and visually engaging interface.

“Orange Downloads has been a phenomenal success,” said Michel Quazza, chief executive officer, SurfKitchen. “Using our mobile Internet platform technology, Orange was able to seamlessly upgrade Orange Downloads by adding a new mobile applications category that significantly increased sales and we are delighted that the results are being recognized by the Mobile Entertainment Forum.”

Originally launched in 2005, Orange Downloads is designed to offer the optimum user experience for mobile services and is available to Orange Signature customers in France, Poland, Spain and the UK. Using SurfKitchen’s technology, Orange introduced the new mobile applications category via an over-the-air update to the Orange Downloads client used by Orange UK Signature device customers in November 2008. By allowing subscribers to simply access it through a routine update, the new applications category was easily discoverable and made an immediate impact on sales.

Rimma Perelmuter, Executive Director of MEF, said: “From the meteoric rise of apps-inspired vendors and content owners in driving consumer engagement to the remarkable growth achieved in emerging markets and the evolution of transparent, user-friendly business models, the 2009 entries provide a window to all the latest trends and innovations. More than ever, the Meffys reflect the increasing importance of mobile as a key engagement and entertainment channel for consumers.”

The 2009 Meffys received entries from more than 60 countries and were judged by 43 independent journalists and analysts. The winners will be announced on 23 June, 2009 at Floridita London, as part of the Mobile Entertainment Forum’s annual event, Mobile Entertainment Market (MeM). [realwire]

Google introducing it new Technology Google Wave

google_wave_logoOn Tuesday, during the Google I/O keynote, Google’s VP of Engineering, Vic Gundotra, laid out a grand vision for the direction Google sees the web heading towards with the move to the HTML 5 standard. While we’re not there yet, all the major browser players besides Microsoft are aligned and ready for the next phase, which will include such things as the ability to run 3D games and movies in the browser without additional plug-ins. But Google wants to take it one step further with a brand new method of communication for this new era. It’s called Google Wave.

Everyone uses email and instant messaging on the web now, but imagine if you could tie those two forms of communication together and add a load of functionality on top of it. At its most fundamental form, that’s essentially what Wave is. Developed by brothers Lars and Jens Rasmussen and Stephanie Hannon out of Google’s Sydney, Australia offices, Wave was born out of the idea that email and instant messaging, as successful as they still are, were both created a very long time ago. We now have a much more robust web full of content and brimming with a desire to share stuff. Or as Lars Rasumussen put it, “Wave is what email would look like if it were invented today.”

Having seen a lengthy demonstration, as ridiculous as it may sound, I have to agree. Wave offers a very sleek and easy way to navigate and participate in communication on the web that makes both email and instant messaging look stale. The much better comparison is coincidentally the company started by another group of (former) Googlers, FriendFeed. But Wave is a different product for a number of reasons, and seemingly has loftier goals — all of which I’ll touch on below.

RIM Isn't Done With SurePress Just Yet

Lazaridis

OK BlackBerry Storm followers, we've got some new news here. RIM's Founder and Co-CEO Mike Lazaridis was just on stage at D7 and told Walt Mossberg and the crowd that "SurePress is here to stay" (big ups to Engadget for live blogging). We had heard that SurePress would be a thing of the past on the next gen device, but haven't really known exactly would that would mean. We heard previously that TruePress could be the new name and that there would be some sort of physical feedback at work, but the early Storm 2 photos and review by Engadget showed a display that looked less than clickable. But according to the head honcho it sounds like we'll see SurePress in one form or another on the next Storm. Most people like the concept of seperating navigation from confirmation but in practice on the original Storm it tends to slow you down more than it aids you (especially while typing). It is still unsure what exactly SurePress will mean on the Storm 2 (be it a physical screen click or something under the screen that registers pressure or something entirely different) but with all the rumors flying around, we are sure the real answer will be known sooner than later. continue...

Nokia's Ovi Store is now Live

consumer_main_image_610x249-copy

Nokia on Tuesday officially launched the Ovi Store. This is the Finnish company’s answer to services like the App Store for the iPhone and the Android Market for Android smartphones. The Ovi Store allows developers to list their programs in an online catalog so users can easily download or buy them.

More than 50 Nokia devices are compatible with the Ovi Store and it can be accessed by visiting store.ovi.com on the browser or downloading the standalone application to your phone. We tried it on our E71 and it worked on both the browser and through the application. The first game we successfully installed did crash our phone, but we’ll put that down as the fault of the app rather than the Ovi Store.

Kevin Bacon Robbed of his Blackberry

On Thursday morning Kevin Bacon kicked off his Sunday shoes when a man grabbed his Blackberry from him at a New York City subway station and took off running. Kevin chased after the dude, but he lost sight of him in the crowd and the thief got away.

I sure hope Kevin has insurance for that Blackberry. Mr. Bacon is used to people stealing from him and he’s probably getting upset about it. The Ponzi-schemer extraordinaire, Bernie Madoff, took Mr. Bacon Bits and his wife, Kyra Sedgwick, for millions of dollars. Actors are generally regarded as being the smartest people in the world (just ask them) so it was hard to believe that he was able to fool the couple.

Blackberry Magnum, Onyx, Pearl 3G, and Gemini to harmonize on AT&T

BlackBerry lovers, AT&T beckons. Looks like the just-reviewed Onyx is heading to AT&T and, as rumored before, so is the Magnum. We've got no pics of the latter device, but it's being touted here as the "BlackBerry Bold portfolio evolution" and uses the same processor as the Bold. It's also got a HVGA touchscreen, QWERTY pad, quad-band GSM / GRS / EDGE, GPS, and WiFi. Want more? How about an apparently non-flip Pearl 3G with 3.6 Mbps of HSDPA goodness, Bluetooth, 3.5mm headset jack, trackball, SureType, and aGPS. Rounding out this quartet is the Gemini, with a 512MHz processor, 256MB flash memory, 128MB RAM, Bluetooth, QVGA LCD, 2 megapixel sans flash, trackball, QWERTY keyboard, 3.5mm headset jack, a microSD slot, possibly GPS, and sadly, no 3G. There's no release date in sight, but hey, knowing they're on the way is half the battle, right?

10 Best PC Games Ever

MSN Tech examined 30 years of PC gaming history to identify 10 of its all-time greatest games.

pcgames

What Makes a PC Game Great?

What elements push a game beyond mere goodness and into greatness?

To this author, PC games are best when they deliver a transcendent gaming experience that is possible only with the aid of a personal computer: They don’t simulate board or card games, reproduce real-world sports or try to approximate movies. They are an art form unto themselves.

I surveyed dozens of PC game developers, asking them to share their picks for the 10 greatest PC titles of all time. In addition to weighing their opinions, I took into account factors such as influence, innovation, design and replay value.

To be considered, a game must have achieved most of its prominence on a PC platform. (This explains why “Tetris,” for example, didn’t make the cut: It was clearly the Nintendo Game Boy’s killer app). I defined a “PC” as any consumer computer that has a keyboard the user can program with arbitrary code — not just a PC of the IBM variety.Continue reading »

First Impression of Blackberry Storm 2

In a network, new photos smartphone BlackBerry Storm 2, and first impressions of this model. Remember, we already wrote about the BlackBerry Storm 2, the successor to the first Storm, also made in the form factor monoblock besklaviaturnogo touch display.

After studying the prototype source reported the presence of 3.2 MP camera, 3.5-mm audio connector and a standard for charging devices for USB. According to him, the operating system is still unstable and study it in detail it was not possible. As expected, the support of the BlackBerry Storm SurePress 2 missing, used a capacitive touch screen. It works like a screen iPhone, said the source. He also noted the changes the appearance of new items, and that it is thinner and more attractive predecessor.

BlackBerry Storm Smartphone 2 works in the networks of GSM and CDMA. Presumably, the sale of the North American market will begin in September. In the U.S., the device will be sold to the operator Verizon Wireless.

WorldWide Mobile Phone Sales Decreased 8.6% in Q1 2009

The ongoing economic recession has its impact on every industry. The mobile phone segment also got hit as the worldwide sale of mobile phones declined by 8.6% in first quarter of 2009. Now there is some positive news as well; the sales of smartphones have witnessed a healthy increase in Q1, 2009.
According to study carried out by Gartner, worldwide mobile phone sales totalled 269.1 million units in the first quarter of 2009 while Smartphone sales surpassed 36.4 million units, a 12.7 per cent increase from the same period last year. Carolina Milanesi, research director for mobile devices at Gartner, based in Egham, UK said “There were some signs of a recovery in markets such as North America and China, but overall sales in the first quarter of 2009 registered the biggest quarter-on-quarter contraction since Gartner began monitoring the market on a quarterly basis in 2001. This was also the first time the market contracted year over year during the first quarter, a period traditionally helped by strong seasonality in the Asia/Pacific market.”

Below is the Table of Worldwide Mobile Phone Sales to End Users in Q1, 2009 (units in thousands)

mobilesalesq12009

Nokia still remained the market leader with 97 million sales but its market share declined to 36.2% from 39.1% while Samsung has performed very well and its market share has grown from 14.4% to 19.1%.

In the smart phone category, Nokia remain the market leader with 41.2% of the market while RIM is second with 19.9% market share and Apple is third with 10.8% market share.

“Much of the smartphone growth during the first quarter of 2009 was driven by touchscreen products, both in midtier and high-end devices,” said Roberta Cozza, principal analyst at Gartner, based in Egham, UK. “’Touch for the sake of touch’ was enough of a driver in the midtier space, but tighter integration with applications and services around music, mobile e-mail, and Internet browsing made the difference at the high end of the market.”

BlackBerry Storm 2 due next month?

Perhaps it should come as no surprise, given the pervasiveness of recent leaks, but word has it that the clickscreen-free BlackBerry Storm 2 could be hitting shelves as early as June, and no later than July. Word comes from Mr. BlackBerryOS.com himself, who got word from an "insider" who has proved reliable in the past. She says the internal deadline for training tech support is end of month, and while such an early followup seems like a bit of a raw deal for original Storm buyers, it doesn't come as too much of a shock. Is it just us, or is this kind of shaping up into a "phone heavy" summer? Maybe it's just the sunstroke.

SlingPlayer Mobile comes to iPhone

SlingPlayer Mobile always seemed like a perfect fit for the iPhone and it’s large display. We have been waiting patiently for it to arrive with it looking less and less likely after rumors of AT&T and/or Apple preventing its release. According to Dave Zatz, SlingPlayer for iPhone is real and is should be up and ready for you to buy (iTunes link) starting tomorrow for $29.99. You will not be able to use it with your AT&T 3G network though as the application is limited to WiFi connections only. Engadget has a post detailing why AT&T won’t allow SlingPlayer to work over its network.

Dave is responding to people’s questions since he has been using the new client on his iPhone for the past month. Sling Media originally stated you would need to upgrade to a newer Slingbox to use this client and that set off a ton of people. Amazingly, they relinquished on this issue and the SlingPlayer Mobile client for the iPhone will work with all Slingbox units. It doesn’t look like the current software lets video fill the entire display, which is a bit of a shame. Read More...

Install Evernote on BlackBerry without the App World

If you have a BlackBerry and are located outside US or carry an unsupported model of BlackBerry (like the Pearl or Curve 8600 series), continue reading.

evernote running on blackberry Evernote, the popular web clipping software, is now available for BlackBerry mobile phones as well in addition to iPhone and Windows Mobile.

With Evernote installed, you can create new text notes or edit existing ones, upload pictures (aka Snapshot note) or record voice memos (audio recording). You can also access your existing Evernote notes, search by keywords, filter by tags, or simply browse.

Since Evernote can easily sync notes across all devices, anything that you clip inside the BlackBerry will instantly become available on the web or your Mac / Windows PC.

Initially, Evernote for Blackberry was available for download only through the BlackBerry App World (under the Productivity & Utility category) but since the store is not available outside US or Canada, Evernote has now provided direct download links to the software as well.

BlackBerry Storm users can either download this ZIP or visit s.evernote.com/stormota from the mobile browser for OTA installation. BlackBerry Bold and BlackBerry Curve (8900) users can get Evernote on their phones via s.evernote.com/bbota or this ZIP.

The other advantage is that with direct links, you can install Evernote on older BlackBerry models as well (like BlackBerry Curve 8600 with OS 4.5).

Mobivox Voice-Activated Mobile Services

Mobivox Launches Portuguese Language Capability for Brazilian Market

Mobivox announced an agreement to make its voice-activated mobile services platform the engine for the VoIP-services component of a new global online e-wallet system called WorldAxxess.

http://www.realwire.com/preview_writeitfiles/LOGOmobivox_master.jpg

Under the agreement, MTC Telecom, a custom-voice-solutions company based in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, plans to use Mobivox-powered international long-distance services to quickly attract customers and build revenue for MTC’s new WorldAxxess micropayments business, via cross marketing. Both service lines are to be introduced in August.

The WorldAxxess micropayment application will allow users to make small-metered online purchases of goods or services – such as newspapers, or downloaded music or ringtones – and pay from small amounts of currency they store online. A simple, easy-to-use online debit system is convenient for users and gives retailers an appealing alternative to processing credit-card payments for small purchases.

As a complement to the micropayment system, WorldAxxess users will be able to place low-cost international calls from and to virtually anywhere. WorldAxxess will rely on Mobivox for the full range of its platform’s capabilities, including voice-activated calling, online storage of users’ address books, and network origination and termination services.

“We wanted to introduce a combination of international VoIP services and micropayments based on tremendous synergies between the two offerings,” said Jan Kling, MTC Telecom owner. “We chose Mobivox after considering partnering with other VoIP providers or building our own platform. The Mobivox platform is a turnkey solution we can get up and running rapidly. It’s very sophisticated, yet easy to use.”

Using the Mobivox│PL platform to accelerate customer acquisition for a much-in-demand application in Brazil and Europe is another example of Mobivox helping service providers and online communities quickly develop, bring to market and monetize exciting new capabilities as extensions of traditional telecom services.

“We’re really pleased to be working with MTC Telecom and helping them deploy voice services to drive the growth of their new micropayments business,” Mobivox CEO Peter Diedrich said. “We look forward to using our Mobivox│PL to help position WorldAxxess right at the forefront of the hot e-wallet trend.”

ViewSonic moves from monitors to mobiles

viewsonic_logo

So, lets say you’re one of the top display makers in the world. Congratulations! Except you’ve grown bored of making all these monitors - you want to mix it up a little. What do you make? Toaster ovens? Nah. Hello Kitty kitchenware? Hell no. You make cell phones. The jump is oh-so obvious, isn’t it?

Well, not really - but James Chu, CEO of ViewSonic, thinks it is, saying “With 20 years of display experience this is a natural extension of our product expertise,” but we’re not really seeing the connection here.

But who knows? Perhaps they’ve got something amazing up there sleeves, and will blow our minds by actually releasing it rather than dabbling for a few months and subsequently releasing nothing at all? Either way, do us all a favor, ViewSonic: Android. We don’t need more platform segmentation.

Another BlackBerry Onyx picture, this time with full frontal!

blackberry onyx front Another BlackBerry Onyx picture, this time with full frontal!

Not even a few minutes after posting about T-Mobile getting the Onyx/Driftwood around September did I see a post by Engadget where they actually have a picture of the BlackBerry Onyx from the front!

Now that I can see it from the front I can say a few more things about it. It seems to me like the Onyx is a Curve 8900 with the QWERTY keypad from the Bold, and is 3G enabled making it part of the 9000 series. There is no Trackpad on the Onyx pictured above, but since this is a pre-production unit the actual production unit may have one.

BlackBerry Overtakes iPhone as Bestselling U.S. Smartphone in Q1

Apple shouldn't get too comfortable with the success of their iPhone as Blackberry has regained the title of best-selling U.S. smartphone for the first quarter of 2009. According to data from NPD Group, the top 5 smart phones were:

1. BlackBerry Curve (all 8300 models)
2. Apple iPhone
3. BlackBerry Storm
4. BlackBerry Pearl
5. T-Mobile G1

BlackBerry also offers multiple models which are also represented on the top sales list. NPD attributes the surge to a number of factors including aggressive giveaways as well as broader availability of the BlackBerry across the four major U.S. national carriers.

The data is interesting to see after there have been persistent rumors that Apple might try to expand the iPhone's market penetration through both a "Lite" version and support on additional U.S. carriers. DaringFireball's John Gruber believes that Apple will model the iPhone product line expansion after the iPod's:

Apple went on to repeatedly improve upon the iPod in two ways: on the high end by producing new devices with the same shape and price but with new features (additional storage, color screens, larger screens, video, etc.); on the low end by taking the existing features and making them smaller and cheaper.

The reason why Apple did this with the iPod, and why I'm convinced they'll do it again with the iPhone, is that when it comes to managing the balance between per-unit profit and overall market share, Apple is determined to err on the side of market share.
Gruber, of course. notes this plan is very different than Apple's Mac strategy in the much more mature PC market. He also believes this is the reason why Apple will eventually have to broaden the iPhone's availability beyond AT&T.

TweetGenius for BlackBerry

BlackBerry users know that stellar Twitter clients have been hard to come by, so whenever a major new release hits the streets, it's something that makes the BlackBerry-carrying Twitter addicts out there -- and there are many of them, rest assured -- sit up and take notice. The latest app is called TweetGenius, and if you've been keeping an eye on our Twitter accounts, you'd know that we've been pretty excited about this app since we first had the opportunity to check it out over a month ago. In that short period of time, it's gone through one hell of a metamorphosis, and it looks like the bar is being raised for future apps -- Twitter and non-Twitter alike -- on the BlackBerry front. Read on for a closer look at what makes this app tick -- and more importantly, to find out whether it'll be replacing your current Twitter client.

Design and Functionality

From the instant you click the TweetGenius icon on your homescreen, it's very apparent that this particular app was created with a heavy emphasis on eye candy. Whereas other third-party app UIs for BlackBerry have frequently been categorized as clunky and not well thought out, TweetGenius is sleek and attractive. The launch screen features three main buttons -- Friends Timeline, Replies, and Direct Messages -- set in front of a cartoon-style city skyline. It's super clean and looks amazing on the Bold's 480 x 320 screen.

BlackBerry Curve 8900 hitting AT&T next month?

We're beginning to wonder if we'll ever see RIM's BlackBerry Curve 8900 hit the AT&T airwaves, but considering just how long it takes for a phone to navigate through the carrier's absurdly long certification process, we'll chalk this one up to technical delays. After spotting the so-called Javelin in AT&T attire way back in November of last year, Boy Genius Report now has it on authority that the handset will finally debut next month. Unfortunately for those hoping for a little bonus in exchange for their patience, it's said to be "a mirror" of the T-Mobile version outside of the bundled Bold themes. Pricing details are still under wraps, but if you've waited this long, do the dollars really matter?

Gemini to be official BlackBerry Curve 8520

Yayyy, people, it is now confirmed that the Gemini is indeed the yet-to-be-official BlackBerry Curve 8520, that low-end smartphone. But the Curve 8520 being in the lower segment has not deterred RIM from slipping in a few surprises, which could become regular features in any upcoming BlackBerry smartphones.
