The grand finale of Nokia Developer Summit 2009 began

The grand finale of Nokia Developer Summit 2009 began this afternoon, when the fruits of 'round-the-clock coding from developers creating Web Runtime (WRT) widgets for use on the Nokia N97 multimedia device came before the judges. 'The quality, creativity, and innovation coming from all the developers competing in the Calling All Innovators Hackathon was extraordinary', noted Srikanth Raju, Head of Marketing for Forum Nokia. Of the widgets submitted for evaluation, three were selected as finalists, and one ultimately won the grand prize of 15,000 euros plus four weeks of spotlight promotion in the Ovi Store. The Ovi Store opens for consumer sales in May.

The Social Location Widget created by Plusmo, named 'Rocket', won the grand prize. The widget, originally proposed in the consumer contest, presents a mini view of the locations of a user's friends. Plusmo created that view by extracting information from users' existing social networks or allowing them to create new networks within the widget environment. Plusmo developers took the concept further. Their application adds information about what a person's friends are doing and allows a user to gift their friends with virtual goods, including a bouquet of flowers sent during the live demo.

Inova IT won first runner-up for the company's Shoppy widget, based on the consumer's idea for a shopping list. The developer innovated on top of the idea by allowing the consumer to share shopping lists with friends and locating and navigating to shops offering the item for sale.

PavingWays won second runner-up for the company's Travel Planner. PavingWays took the basic concept of a widget that would track a person's progress through a trip and added a Twitter feed associated with the location of the destination. During the live demo the destination selected was Monaco, and the Twitter feed was from someone attending Nokia Developer Summit 2009.

Congratulations to the Hackathon winners, and to all the developers skilled enough to be invited to compete in this prestigious — and tiring — 24-hour event!

Verizon’s BlackBerry Storm Receives New OS Update

Chris wrote on mobilewhack: For all you Storm users under contract with Verizon, there’s a new OS that’s going to arrive soon. In a recent internal Verizon memo OS version 4.7.0.141 is mentioned. The memo also says that the new OS is here and it should be available soon to all Verizon customers that own a BlackBerry Storm 9530. RIM is apparently working on an even bigger version, 4.7.0.201 for the same phone but until such version is available you should try out Verizon’s update. As always, make sure you backup before you start messing up that RIM phone. And make sure you tell us how you feel about the new OS!

iPhone OS 3.0 Beta 4 now available

b4

Man, they’re just cranking these things out. Just two weeks after iPhone OS 3.0 Beta 3 (which was, in turn, two weeks after iPhone OS 3.0 Beta 2), we’ve got another Beta.

Beta 4 of iPhone OS 3.0 is now available for developers, as long as they’ve downloaded the brand spankin’ new iPhone 8.2 pre-release. It just went live, so we’re not quite sure what’s new here. If you spot anything, let us know - we’ll do the same.

Also, it’s starting to look like we can expect Betas every 2 weeks until release. Next one ought to be on Tuesday, May 12.

Update: Details are still incredibly sparse, but here’s what we’ve heard so far:

  • MMS now working on more carriers without modified carrier bundles (Only one report - still working on confirming this.)
  • General performance updates, far less crash prone than the past builds.
  • The “Store” settings pane now functions, allowing you basic control over your iTunes account
  • API Change: “SKErrorPaymentNowAllowed allowed and was replaced with SKErrorPaymentNotAllowed”

More as we hear it.

Don't copy if you can't paste!

A popular motivational speaker was entertaining his audience.

He said : "The best years of my life were spent in the arms of a woman who wasn't my wife!"

The audience was in silence and shock.

The speaker added: "And that woman was my mother!"

Laughter and applause.

A week later, a top manager trained by the motivational speaker tried to crack this very effective joke at home.

He was a bit foggy after a drink.

He said loudly, "The greatest years of my life were spent in the arms of a woman who was not my wife!"

The wife went red with shock and rage.

Standing there for 20 seconds trying to recall the second half of the joke, the manager finally blurted out

"... and I can't remember who she was!"

Moral of the story:

Don't copy if you can't paste !

The act of Googling oneself

The act of Googling oneself has become the digital age's premiere guilty pleasure — an activity enjoyed by all and admitted by few. The phenomenon has even been the subject of scholarly research. Last year, a team of Swiss and Australian social scientists published a study concluding that the practice of self-Googling (or "Egosurfing" as it's sometimes called) can partly be traced to a rise in narcissism in society but is also an attempt by people to identify and shape their personal online "brand." The authors of the survey no doubt returned to their cubicles and Googled themselves to see if the study was posted online. (It is: right here)

Facebook Inc. is expected to announce momentous plans today

Facebook Inc. is expected to announce momentous plans to open up core parts of its sites. This will likely trigger a wave of third-party integration of Facebook streams with other popular feeds, most notably that of Twitter.

The announcement, predictable Monday, means developers can access the photos, videos, notes and upload the comments to Facebook, with the permission of the users. It introduces a great change in the social networking site, which controls over the look and feel of its service.

We will be a major step closer to a single stream of realtime events. This in turn will rapidly accelerate a convergence around micromessaging similar to the one around email when it achieved a critical mass following AOL’s opening up of the limited educational and government mail systems to average users.

Developers could build a Web site that aggregates just the articles certain friends upload to the site or build a service that associates the photos a user had uploaded to Facebook with their account on another Web site, like an email service. To take advantage of the new services, users would have to allow the companies to receive access to their Facebook data, according to people familiar with the matter, and users' privacy settings on Facebook will extend to any new services built.

FriendFeed’s realtime direct messages will likely be duplicated in short order by Facebook, and the opportunity for meshing Facebook and Twitter together will prove irresistible to the hot Twitter client market, what with Tweetie for the Mac synchronizing with its leading iPhone app.

The plans are expected to be discussed at a developer event in Palo Alto on Monday. The announcement suggests something between those two views, with a single aggregated feed managed by two or more of the players in a distributed cross-licensing model.

Still, Facebook, which has around 200 million users world-wide, has been heavily criticized for not doing more and for requiring developers to write some services using a customized Facebook programming language. Other companies like micro-blogging service Twitter have generated buzz by opening up more of their core features to developers.

BlackBerry 9630 to launch as the " Blackberry Tour"

Amy-Mae Elliott wrote on pocket-lint.com that RIM's leaked BlackBerry 9630 smartphone is likely to be called the "Tour" when it supposedly launches in early summer, reports US blog Boy Genius Report.

In what's pretty much a two plus two equals five scenario, the news comes from a tipster, but is backed up by some decent logic.

Chris also reported on mobilewhack.com that aside from the 9630's "World Edition" tag working with the "Tour" theme, www.blackberry9630.com and www.blackberrytour.com were both registered on the same day, and point to the same IP address.
http://www.techdigest.tv/rim-blackberry-logo.jpg
Add into the mix the fact that we know rock band U2's "360 Degrees" concert tour is to be "Presented by BlackBerry", and RIM is working with U2 to create something, this handset - with possible U2-custom software - could well be it.

The name hasn’t been officially confirmed yet but coincidentally two new domains have been recently registered: www.blackberry9630.com and www.blackberrytour.com. Does the Tour have anything to do with U2’s upcoming “360 Degrees” concert tour? We suspect so, especially as we know that the band together with RIM are working on something special for BlackBerries.

BlackBerry solution will revolutionize your calendar

Free web and BlackBerry solution will revolutionize your calendar

tungle ui blackberry

Tungle Accelerate is a free and comprehensive web-based platform. It is a next-generation solution that increases the value, improves the effectiveness and extends the life of current electronic calendaring systems by seamlessly linking and syncing its platform to provide advanced features for Outlook, Exchange, Google Calendar, iCal and Entourage, among others.

Tungle Accelerate significantly increases the accuracy while decreasing the time it takes to schedule and book meetings between individuals or groups – inside or outside an organization. It enables the proposal of multiple time slots with just one click; for the first time, permits people to see all invitees’ free / busy schedules both inside and outside organizations’ groupware platforms, before invitations are sent – and prevents double-booking through its intelligent and dynamically updated meeting invitations. This significantly decreases frustration and accelerates the speed of booking meetings.

“Despite all of the advances in communications and online meeting tools, people often still feel hopelessly frustrated when trying to schedule a meeting for a group of people from different organizations because of the difficulty in accessing calendars,” said Mark Levitt, vice president for Collaboration and Enterprise 2.0 Strategies at IDC. “Tungle changes this paradigm by accelerating the process of sharing relevant calendar information to allow people to focus on having productive meetings, rather than on meeting logistics.”

“We are excited about what is in store for Tungle” said Chris Shipley, Chairman of the Guidewire Group and executive producer of the DEMO conferences. “They have identified a significant pain for all professionals and are tackling this problem in a way that is simple, ingenious and effective.”

“Calendars were originally designed to help people be more productive. However, electronic calendaring systems are silos and don’t facilitate the easy scheduling of meetings between individuals or groups, and certainly not with people outside an organization or on a different system,” said Marc Gingras, chief executive officer at Tungle. “Tungle Accelerate breaks down those electronic calendar silos, significantly reducing wasted time and effort. The best part is that people don’t need to learn a new electronic calendaring or groupware package.”

Tungle works in sync with leading electronic calendars so busy people don’t have to switch over to an entirely new system to get the benefits of calendar acceleration. Supported calendars include: Outlook - with or without Exchange, Google Calendar, Apple iCal, and Entourage for MAC. In addition, Tungle recently partnered with IBM and will be working with them to accelerate Lotus Notes later this year.

Tungle also enables users to create a personal Meet with MeTM link that can be added to their email signature and public profile on services that include LinkedIn, Facebook and Xing. With it, a person can publish their availability and allow others to easily schedule meetings with them, without having to sign up with Tungle.

In stark comparison to what calendars alone provide, synching Tungle Accelerate with their electronic calendar or groupware, people can:

• Coordinate one-on-one or group meetings with anyone, even non Tungle users.
• Propose multiple time slots to avoid the ongoing back and forth emails/phone calls to find the one time that works for everyone.
• Prevent double-bookings with meeting invitations that dynamically update when they add new events to their calendar, so meeting conflicts are eliminated.
• Share their free/busy or detailed calendar across different companies and environments.
• Set up a personal Meet with MeTM link in their email signature or public profile (LinkedIn, Facebook, Xing, etc), and allow others to view their availability and schedule meetings, without having to sign-up.
• Leverage smartphone (BlackBerry and iPhone) meeting invitation support – with no download required.
• Initiate meeting invitations and view shared calendars from their Outlook or Google Application.
• Enjoy automatic time zone detection that dynamically customizes meeting invitations for the recipient’s time zone.

Vopium joins the iPhone VoIP app club

Last night, reader Jim Rob Jones emailed to express his displeasure over my switch to the BlackBerry, calling us “irrelevant” because I am not carrying an iPhone. Well, Jim, since I’m not willing to put up with the poor 3G connections from AT&T, I carry an iPod Touch, which does pretty much the same job and allows me to write about iPhone Platform apps. Of course, it does prevent me from yelling at my iPhone, but my doctor thinks that is a good thing. With Wi-Fi and a growing number of VoIP apps such as Skype, Nimbuzz and Truphone, I can also use it to make outbound calls. Today Vopium,a low-cost VoIP service provider, jumped in the fray and released an iPhone app.

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLMcuD2EtnIpGquc4hwfaXmpAbg8tpyEaYIGLSfOk4njqZk-Gk_5CqcR1AJmd2KZ26dzPp0RaYRLih_FsxzuJL4dZ-qfSDq5APrsgrxeJCQCMwX8sXRTZOQv1Ypdto7xusMcZSJVOLZU6I/s200/logo_tagline.png

The company will add iPod Touch support for its service in a couple of weeks. I will check it out then. Meanwhile, if you have an iPhone, you can sign up for their service today, and get 30 minutes of free calls and 30 text messages (SMS). Vopium also works on other handsets, such as BlackBerry and Symbian-based phones.

SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone

Mel Martine wrote:

Rarely has an iPhone/iPod touch app seen so many ups and downs.

People have expected Sling Media to provide a version of their streaming video player for Apple since the iPhone first launched, but it has yet to materialize. In January, Sling demonstrated a beta of SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone at Macworld and created a flurry of excitement.

Three weeks ago Sling announced with a great deal of fanfare that the app had been submitted to the App Store, but so far, all we're hearing are crickets...

Earlier this month AT&T changed its published Terms of Service to directly prohibit apps like SlingPlayer Mobile from operating on the AT&T network. After a major meltdown from AT&T customers, all the carrier could say was "whoops, we didn't mean it -- that was a mistake".

Last week, an anonymous tipster with a dubious domain told TUAW that he worked for Apple and stated that the company was going to reject the app because AT&T couldn't support the bandwidth demands. Of course, carriers do support the SlingPlayer on other phones, including the BlackBerry and several Windows Mobile phones.

So, here we are, more than three weeks after SlingPlayer Mobile was submitted to the app store, and there's still nothing. Nada. Bupkis. Zlich. In the meantime, Sling Media has alienated many Slingbox owners by intimating that a lot of their older gear won't work with the iPhone app when (or if) it is released.

Disappointed with the slow rate of progress and the constant stream of rumors, I checked with Sling Media today to get the official word on what was up. Cathy Cook, a spokesperson for the company, says the app was submitted, and that Sling Media and Apple are in regular touch with each other. She says anything else people hear is rumor and conjecture. She added that Sling Media thinks the app is 'solid and a great experience' and they'd like nothing better than to have it in the App Store.

I dashed off another quick email to Ms. Cook asking if Apple had communicated any concerns about the app in the three weeks that it has been in limbo, but I haven't receive a response to that question so far. She did mention in the first email that "We've been told that a two-to-three week wait is common. Some apps may take less time, but it's important to remember that SlingPlayer is far more complex than a typical iPhone app. It makes sense it would take a little extra time to go through this process."

I think it is pretty clear that the 'inside' source at Apple who claimed that the app was rejected was a hoaxer, but it's also clear that Apple is taking a while to evaluate SlingPlayer Mobile before it either passes or fails the App Store testing. With AT&T begging Apple to renew the iPhone partnership for another year, and Apple about to launch new iPhone software (and maybe hardware) in the next few months, all eyes are on AT&T, Apple and Sling. It's a guess as to what will happen next in this little drama, so all you can do is wait for the Sling Media announcement and keep your fingers crossed. If you'd like to hear directly from Sling Media when the app becomes available or is finally turned down, there is now a web page where you can submit your email address to a contact list.

  • Nokia E71x coming on 4 May, check out all the E71x guides

The last we heard, the Nokia E71x was coming to AT&T in April or May for $99.99 after rebate and contract. I had a tipster send in some valid looking information that shows a 4 May launch date so let’s go with that for now. I also received several PDF documents for the E71x that should answer just about every question you have about the device before you get it into your hands.

Nokia E71x to launch on 4 May, check out all the E71x guides

PDF documents on the AT&T Nokia E71x:

There is some great information in these documents and I may just have to swing by my AT&T store to pick one of these up. This purchase could also help to support getting more Nokia S60 devices here in the US, right? I am always looking for ways to justify my purchase ;)

I spent some time with the E71x at CTIA and think it should do well when people see it in the store next to all the other forward facing QWERTY devices. The sleek black stainless steel design and performance should bring a few people to the S60 platform. [from Nokia Experts]

    Oracle Corporation buys Sun Microsystems

Oracle Corporation (NASDAQ: ORCL) and Sun Microsystems (NASDAQ: JAVA) announced today they have entered into a definitive agreement under which Oracle will acquire Sun common stock for $9.50 per share in cash. The transaction is valued at approximately $7.4 billion, or $5.6 billion net of Sun’s cash and debt. “We expect this acquisition to be accretive to Oracle’s earnings by at least 15 cents on a non-GAAP basis in the first full year after closing. We estimate that the acquired business will contribute over $1.5 billion to Oracle’s non-GAAP operating profit in the first year, increasing to over $2 billion in the second year. This would make the Sun acquisition more profitable in per share contribution in the first year than we had planned for the acquisitions of BEA, PeopleSoft and Siebel combined,” said Oracle President Safra Catz.

    http://www.finfacts.ie/artman/uploads/2/Sun-intel.jpg

“The acquisition of Sun transforms the IT industry, combining best-in-class enterprise software and mission-critical computing systems,” said Oracle CEO Larry Ellison. “Oracle will be the only company that can engineer an integrated system – applications to disk – where all the pieces fit and work together so customers do not have to do it themselves. Our customers benefit as their systems integration costs go down while system performance, reliability and security go up.”

There are substantial long-term strategic customer advantages to Oracle owning two key Sun software assets: Java and Solaris. Java is one of the computer industry’s best-known brands and most widely deployed technologies, and it is the most important software Oracle has ever acquired. Oracle Fusion Middleware, Oracle’s fastest growing business, is built on top of Sun’s Java language and software. Oracle can now ensure continued innovation and investment in Java technology for the benefit of customers and the Java community.

The Sun Solaris operating system is the leading platform for the Oracle database, Oracle’s largest business, and has been for a long time. With the acquisition of Sun, Oracle can optimize the Oracle database for some of the unique, high-end features of Solaris. Oracle is as committed as ever to Linux and other open platforms and will continue to support and enhance our strong industry partnerships.

“Oracle and Sun have been industry pioneers and close partners for more than 20 years,” said Sun Chairman Scott McNealy. “This combination is a natural evolution of our relationship and will be an industry-defining event.”

“This is a fantastic day for Sun’s customers, developers, partners and employees across the globe, joining forces with the global leader in enterprise software to drive innovation and value across every aspect of the technology marketplace,” said Jonathan Schwartz, Sun’s CEO, “From the Java platform touching nearly every business system on earth, powering billions of consumers on mobile handsets and consumer electronics, to the convergence of storage, networking and computing driven by the Solaris operating system and Sun’s SPARC and x64 systems. Together with Oracle, we’ll drive the innovation pipeline to create compelling value to our customer base and the marketplace.”

“Sun is a pioneer in enterprise computing, and this combination recognizes the innovation and customer success the company has achieved. Our largest customers have been asking us to step up to a broader role to reduce complexity, risk and cost by delivering a highly optimized stack based on standards,” said Oracle President Charles Phillips. “This transaction will preserve and enhance investments made by our customers, while we continue to work with our partners to provide customers with choice.”

The Board of Directors of Sun Microsystems has unanimously approved the transaction. It is anticipated to close this summer, subject to Sun stockholder approval, certain regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions.

There will be a conference call today to discuss the transaction at 5:30 a.m. Pacific time. Investors can listen to the conference call by dialing (719) 234-7870, passcode 923645. A replay will be available for 24 hours after the call ends at (719) 884-8882, passcode: 923645. A live audio webcast of the call will be made available at www.oracle.com/investor and a replay will be available for seven days after the call ends.

Nokia Siemens Networks has been awarded a frame contract to undertake this network expansion over a period of five years.

    Pimp My BlackBerry?

It looks like the people at Research in Motion, the creators of the BlackBerry Mobile devices, have taken a cue from Apple Computer and introduced the BlackBerry App World, a virtual destination for applications that will enhance your BlackBerry experience. As a long time Apple iPhone user, I was intrigued by this announcement and wanted to take a moment to look under the hood of this new service and check out applications I would love to have on my BlackBerry device, if I owned one.

    BlackBerry App World

    The Scouting Report

I headed over to the BlackBerry App World website, thinking I would be able to view a littany of fresh applications, only to be surprised at the fact that you must first own a particular BlackBerry device to view the service. But not any old device will due. You must own a BlackBerry smartphone, running BlackBerry® Device Software version 4.2 or higher, to even be able to download the App World application to browse the wares. What do you do if you are a window shopper and not certain if you want to download this additional application? What if I am in a location where the network is overworked and my connection speed is not nominal or, like this never happens, you are in a dead zone?

I was immediately frustrated by this notion. Apple’s App store can be accessed via your iPhone, on the go, or through your iTunes application, when you are in front of your computer, and it works with both versions of the phone. Look, I understand that RIM is playing “catch up” in this field, but I would think they would’ve thought this one through. Limiting the ability to window shop for applications just to the device itself seemed antiquated and one dimensional. Plus, when I combine that with the number of online reveiws I’ve read regarding the instability of the App World application as a whole, I become even more perplexed.

    Where are the apps?

But, I digress. I wanted to bring you a fresh list of noteable applications that would start you on your way. Unfortunately, I cannot. I did see that the usual suspects, such as Facebook and AOL Instant Messenger, have applications available that are free. But, I was more curious to see if there were any hidden gems by third party developers that you would find handy. The only two I have seen, so far, are a lite version of Skype, which will be availble May 2009, and Shazam, a song recognition application that I personally cannot live without on my iPhone.

ShazamIf you are a music junkie who always want to know what song you are listening to, who the artist is and where you can purchase the track, this song recognition software is tailor made for you. Simply launch the application when you hear a track you would like more information on and let Shazam do the rest. And, within moments, you will have all of the information you need to grow that music collection. You can also share your information with your friends easily through the application. Head over to the official Shazam website for more information. There is a 60 day trial offer. After 60 days, the application is still free, but you will be limited to only certain functions within the application.

    What to look forward to

There is a lot to be said for the ease of use and plug and play capabilities of the iPhone and the supporting application. Plus, the fact that the device can be used on either an Apple Computer or a PC makes it even more desireable. But ease of use has never been the case for the BlackBerry devices and the trend seems to be continuing with their App World application. I just get the feeling that not enough thought was put into how the end user would use, or would want to use, the software. And not being able to window shop for applications left me with a handicap. I am hoping there are handy apps for you to interact with your multitude of social networks like Twitter and Digg, or a great and stable RSS reader so you can stay up to date with vidagirl, but I just don’t know at this moment.

But, if you own a BlackBerry® smartphone, that meets the minimum system requirements, you simply need to download the BlackBerry App World application and you are on your way! Unfortunately, this is only available to customers in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.

Vodafone is allowing you to pre-order your Nokia N97

The Nokia N97 is set to ship on Vodafone from July - if the update on the company’s site is to be believed.

We brought you news at the end of last week that the Nokia N97 was about to go pre-order and it seems it has.

Vodafone is the first carrier to load up a page allowing you to pre-order your Nokia N97.

    http://images-shop.vodafone.co.uk/eshopweb/assets/images/dynamic//phones/nokia/nokia-n97/nokia_n97_black_g3_open.png

Check out the Vodafone Nokia N97 page.

Well, when we say pre-order, it seem the holding page is very much that - a holding page, as you can enter your details and Vodafone will let yuou know when it’s due.

Vodafone gives a breakdown of what we can expect:

Go straight to your web favourites from the Nokia N97’s home screen - and enjoy superfast internet when you’re browsing.

Up to 48GB of memory means you can take your whole world with you. And for great photos, there’s the 5 megapixel camera with a sharp-shooting Carl Zeiss lens.

Load up your music, videos, pics and games on 32GB of built-in memory. Store even more by adding another 16GB - perfect for the DVD quality videos you’ll shoot with your N97.

A fantastic 5 megapixel camera gives you pin-sharp pictures day or night. And they look amazing on the N97’s crystal clear 3.5″ touch screen. Slide out the QWERTY keyboard and you can add captions to your best shots before you put them online.

However, no more news is forthcoming, not even what we’re likely to find in the box! So, while it’s great news that Vodafone will definitely be carrying the Nokia N97 come July, we’re still no nearer to an official launch date or a price for the most eagerly awaiting Nokia of 2009.

Sadly, there is no news from Nokia Online as to whether there is about to be a simialr page popping up on the Nokia site. We’ll keep our eyes peeled and let you know as soon as it happens.

Today I am going to tell you about the amazing service which I found recently, this is Time Svr. These guys come up with the great Idea to help people in their busy life.

They provides on-demand Virtual Assistants, called Aides, for busy professionals who'd like to get the most out of their day. TimeSvr members can access an Aide anytime (24/7/365), from anywhere, using email, text messaging, Skype IM, the Phone or the Web. There Aides are specially handpicked to provide high satisfaction while carrying out almost any task requested. They are equipped with the technology they need to do almost any task you require off them, from arranging travel and dinner reservations to making phone calls and doing research on the internet for you. The system is flexible to allow you to use your Aide to do whatever you think is important, however you would like it done.

    https://www.timesvr.com/images/screenshot.gif

There Workspace allows you to access every single task you have set, regardless of how you communicated it, in one place. Task updates and status are also reflected here.

Each member also has access to a customizable profile. This is where you can store information about yourself which will help your Aide perform the tasks you set (Frequent Flyer numbers, restaurant preferences, schedule reminders, etc.). All information can be edited or deleted at any point in time, putting the control in your hands. Don't have time to fill out the profile just once? No worries! The result? Perfect service tailored to your needs, every time!

I found this a very cost effective solution, currently TimeSvr offers a 3 day free trial for its Personal service, which provides unlimited basic tasks and up to 8 hours of complex tasks a month, for only $69 per month. TimeSvr Dedicated service allows companies and individuals to buy chunks of Aide time, at $7.5/hour or $850 monthly for a full time Aide (discounts available for longer contracts).

Ashton Kutcher Beats CNN to Twitter Million Followers

Actor Ashton Kutcher (@aplusk) became the first twitter user to achieve a million (1,000,000) followers at 6.12 UTC today. He narrowly beat CNN breaking news (@cnnbrk) which had overtaken the Barack Obama twitter account as the world’s most popular in the last few months. CNN became the second account with a million followers just under half an hour later . Both users had been heavily promoting their race to a million, Kutcher using UStream.tv and CNN using their own broadcast channel. The Huffington Post carried a live counter and follower graph that looked like something from a US presidential election.

This milestone confirms a number of observations about twitter as a ‘channel’.

    • On-line popularity is linked to off-line popularity - both Kutcher and CNN are hardly unknown.
    • Twitter can be a broadcast channel. It is neither the principal function nor does it reflect twitter’s flexibilty but if enough people subscribe to a feed you can ‘broadcast’ information and links.
    • Twitter works as a news feed - lots of traditional news meda are bulding large follower numbers. Group them together and you have a powerful customisable news channnel.
    • Twitter is now firmly part of the celebrity PR portfolio.

For those that say that twitter is just this year’s social web fad it’s not about to fizzle out just yet.

T-Mobile Sidekick LX officially announced all over again

Sound familiar? Indeed, this isn't the first time T-Mobile has offered a Sidekick LX -- but much like last year's simply-named Sidekick, the carrier is once again carrying forward branding while totally revamping the hardware. The 2009 edition of the Sidekick LX is thoroughly new and pretty much nails every item on every Sidekick fan's wishlist: GPS, 3G data, an absolutely glorious 3.2-inch full wide VGA display, and super-tight integration with Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace. You've also got a 3.2 megapixel AF camera with LED flash, microSD expansion (T-Mobile throws a 1GB card in the box), video recording and playback (including YouTube access), stereo Bluetooth, quadband EDGE, and HSDPA 2100 for high-speed coverage when you're galavanting around Europe. The ace up T-Mobile's sleeve, though, might be Exchange ActiveSync support, which will be coming via the on-device software catalog shortly after launch. It's available for pre-sale to current T-Mobile customers starting today -- everyone else will have to wait until May 13 -- but either way, you'll be paying $199.99 after rebate on contract in your choice of "carbon" or "orchid" finishes. Check out all the snazzy photography below -- and follow the break for our quick first impressions of the phone. [image/post credits: engadgetmobile]

"nobody gets it perfect out the door" : RIM CEO on BlackBerry Storm

    http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/04/blackberry-storm-red-table-.jpg

If there's two things we love, it's hearing RIM's own Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis open their gaping traps. While the former was sufficiently panned back in January for exclaiming that buggy smartphone software was simply the "new reality," his partner in crime may have just done him one better. In a recent sit-down with Laptop Mag, Mike was specifically asked to address that aforementioned quote. His response? "That's our first touch product, and you know nobody gets it perfect out the door. You know other companies were having problems with their first releases." If you're struggling to translate that into layman speak, allow us: "Tough luck, early adopters!"

As the interview progressed, the co-CEO took the opportunity to snub Apple on its inability to get Push Email out early on, noting that BlackBerry OS has "constantly been underestimated" and was "designed to multitask from day one." He also stumbled all over himself when it came to speaking about the BlackBerry's web browser, stating that "by writing our browser in Java, that provides our CIOs and wireless managers the assurances they need, to allow the browser to access internal information at the same time it accesses external information." We've literally meditated on that for a solid half-hour, and we still have absolutely zero idea what it means in English. Nevertheless, the whole thing is a pretty great -- if not comical -- read, so give it a look and share your colorful opinions in comments below. [image/post credits engadget]

Samsung HD i8910 (OmniaHD) is a witch. [Plus a video sample]

It looks like Samsung might have hired the same folks responsible for their last Omnia viral video to conjure up one for the HD i8910 (which, depending on where you live, may or may not go by the OmniaHD.)

This one doesn’t seem quite as creative as the last one (though, as that one was a play on something us gadget bloggers do on a weekly basis, we might be a bit biased toward it), but it’s bound to get them some hits. After showing off the HD i8910’s video quality a bit (which, if you pop the embed into HD mode, doesn’t seem too shabby. Of course, it’s professionally tailored not to), they make the phone “disappear”, challenging the viewer to guess how it was done.

Be it witchcraft, slight of hand, or a homage to Duck Soup, we’ve leave the sleuthing up to you - but check after the jump for one of the oddities we noticed.

    picture-11

Either someone forgot to flip the S’s when they were setting up the “mirror”, or the HD i8910 is made by Samsung’s secret sister company, Zamzung. Spot anything else amiss? Let us know in the comments.

BlackBerry Web Browser Shortcuts from CrackBerry

    BlackBerry Browser Tips

The Call for BlackBerry 101 Article Ideas post we ran last week got a great response - over the weeks / months ahead you'll see a new burst of helpful how tos and guides hit the blogs that'll further build out the knowledge base in our existing lecture series.

One of the areas where readers expressed interest in learning more was in regards to the BlackBerry web browser. For a lot of new-to-BlackBerry owners it isn't readily clear as to how to get the most out of it. Back on New Year's Eve we posted a must-read article called BlackBerry Browsers Explained, which walked through the basics of the native browser (the differences between Internet browser, Hotspot browser, etc.). After knowing when and how to use each browser, the next step in becoming speedy is learning the shortcuts!

The BlackBerry is full of useful shortcuts, and the BlackBerry web browser is no exception. Some browser shortcuts overlap with others on the device as they should -- t for top, b for bottom and spacebar to scroll down the page in steps -- while others are more browser specific and sometimes a little less intuitive: h for the homepage, r to refresh, g to go to an address, s for options, k for bookmarks, u to hide the status banner at the top, i and o to zoom in and out. There are even more shortcuts and tricks for the BlackBerry browser and it just so happens our pal Al Sacco posted an in-depth browser tricks guide earlier this week that really drills into it. If getting the most out of your BlackBerry browser is on the agenda, I suggest you check it out. To learn even more BlackBerry keyboard shortcuts, you'll want to check out this post.
